The Cat in the Hat

Cat in the HatI was asked to make a cake for a Dr. Seuss-themed 1st birthday party, so The Cat in the Hat seemed perfect!

I made a runout from royal icing, piping the outline in black, filling in the basic shapes with red and white, then adding the details in black while the coloured icing was still wet.  While it was drying out, I made the cake – a plain victoria sponge, sandwiched with chocolate butter cream – and covered it in fondant I had coloured light blue.

It turned out very well, and family of the birthday boy loved it.

Jaws

Happy Birthday MiloMilo wanted a strawberry shark with lots of sharp teeth as Jaws is currently his favourite movie.  I started by adding red food colouring to the Victoria Sponge cake batter to make a very cool pink, and flavouring the buttercream with strawberry preserves.  Then I built up the basic outline using layers carved to shape and covered this with a mixture of cake crumbs and buttercream to get a nice smooth form.

This was covered with grey fondant which I’d left a little streaked for texture.  I merged this into white around the jaw to create the gum line, lining the mouth with pink.

I cut nice pointy teeth from another strip of white fondant and stuck those in place by moistening the back, adding eyes of black fondant and using some more of the grey for fins and tail.  A little blue food colouring mixed into the strawberry buttercream created exactly the right shade of ocean for the shark to swim in.Jaws

Some birthday wishes piped onto the top, and it was done.  It didn’t last long!It didn't last long!

Pip-Boy (Fallout)

Pip-Boy
I am reliably informed by the boys in my family that the RobCo Pip-Boy (Personal Information Processor) is a wrist computer integral to the game Fallout.  We decided to create one in cake and frosting for Aron’s 12th birthday!Lime green frosting

Layers of cake were sandwiched with lime lime green frosting, carved to shape and covered in fondant tinted to approximately the right colours.

It was rapidly consumed by a hoard of ravening 7th graders!Pip-Boy2Pip-Boy3Pip-Boy1

Stormtrooper

Stormtrooper
A new Star Wars movie.  One of the heroes a Stormtrooper.  Clearly Magnus needed a Stormtrooper helmet cake!

I built up the basic form in layers of chocolate cake and frosting, and carved it to shape.  Then I made a dome using a mixture of cake crumbs and buttercream, and used that to create a nice smooth, rounded top for the helmet.  After covering it all in white fondant, I added details in black fondant and painted in the vents with black food colouring. Thank you, Duane, for keeping me company as I worked late into the evening!

I think this is my new favourite.

Ballroom Dancers

Not only is she an awesome 5th grade teacher, Ms Soccodato is also a competitive ballroom dancer – hence this cake for her birthday this year.
Cutting the cakethe runout

I copied an image she had given me of her and her dance partner Delyan in action and created a runout in royal icing.  Once I’d made the cake – triple layer chocolate and vanilla sponge – and covered it in white fondant, I transferred it (very carefully!!) on top.

Ms Soccodato was very happy, as you can see in this shot.  So were 5S!

Ant-Man

A much better movie that I was expecting, Ant-Man was also a fun cake to make.  I found an image online that I wanted to copy and used that as my template, cutting the cake to shape and covering it with grey fondant.   Guided by the template

I then built up the form of his mouthpiece with layers of grey fondant and “drew” in the the key features in black royal icing, and added the red details when that was dry.

I was pretty happy with how it turned out in the end, as was the birthday boy, Seth.Grey fondant base

Bean (cat in a box!)

Leave a cardboard box on the floor, and our cat Bean will sit in it.  This summer, he particularly loved the boxes we bought peaches in, so Ethan thought this would be a great idea for a cake.  Yay!Bean

We made a chocolate sponge, cut it to size and covered it with blue fondant, then added layers more cake which we carved into a cat-like form – taking the dozing Bean as our inspiration.

Ethan helped make and colour the fondant, cut the cake to form the peaches box, and add texture to his fur.

It felt kinda weird eating out pet, but he tasted great!!

Australia

This cake was created for my friend Emma’s Australia Day party last year.  Not sure why it didn’t make it to this gallery until now!
I printed an outline of Australia that was the right size for the tray and used it as a guide for cutting the slabs of cake to shape, which I then sandwiched with blue buttercream.

I draped over some dark blue fondant to make the flag background, as you can see in the photo, trimming it neatly round the edges.

The Union Flag, Commonwealth Star and Southern Cross were then added using more fondant, cut to shape.

Minecraft Cupcakes

Minecraft cupcakes – simple chocolate fairy cakes, topped with Creeper faces.

I had lots of fun making the pixelated green, weaving strips of different coloured fondant, then using the rolling pin to blend them together.
